High Court of Karnataka - BENGALURU, INDIA

Red neoclassical High Court of Karnataka building in Bengaluru surrounded by gardens

Known locally as Attara Kacheri, meaning “Eighteen Offices,” this imposing structure was completed in 1868 during the British colonial period. Its vivid red façade was chosen to stand out against the lush greenery of Cubbon Park and remains one of the city’s most recognizable architectural landmarks.

The court’s neoclassical design, with its grand columns and symmetrical proportions, conveys authority and permanence. Yet the building’s bold color gives it an unexpected warmth, transforming a seat of justice into one of Bengaluru’s most photographed monuments.

Standing directly opposite the Vidhana Soudha, the High Court symbolizes another pillar of democracy: the judiciary.

In this view, the formal pathway and manicured gardens create a ceremonial approach, emphasizing the dignity of the institution and the harmony between architecture and landscape.

Justice may be an abstract ideal, but here it is housed in unmistakable red.
