Beneath the Dome - BERLIN, GERMANY

Berlin Cathedral rising above trees and parkland in central Berlin

Rising above the trees of Museum Island, the great dome of the Berlin Cathedral has watched over the German capital through empire, war, division, and reunification.

Completed in 1905, the cathedral was designed to project imperial confidence during the reign of Kaiser Wilhelm II. Yet today, surrounded by open lawns and quiet pathways, it feels less imposing than reflective — a monument shaped as much by history as by architecture.

What makes this scene especially striking is the atmosphere around it. The bare branches, the soft spring light, and the wide urban space create a calmer image of Berlin, far from the city’s stereotypical intensity. Locals walk dogs, tourists pause for photographs, and everyday life unfolds beneath one of the city’s grandest domes.

Berlin often reveals itself this way: monumental, but deeply human at the same time.
