Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle by Yinka Shonibare – LONDON, ENGLAND

Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle sculpture by Yinka Shonibare in London, England.

A striking public artwork featuring a detailed model of HMS Victory enclosed inside a giant glass bottle, created by British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare.

Originally installed on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square in 2010, Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle reimagines Admiral Nelson’s flagship with vibrant patterned sails inspired by African textiles. The piece explores themes of empire, trade, identity and Britain’s complex maritime history.

The oversized bottle magnifies the traditional souvenir concept into monumental scale, transforming a familiar object into a powerful cultural statement. Now permanently displayed at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London, the sculpture continues to attract visitors fascinated by its symbolism and craftsmanship.

History, art and commentary — sealed in glass.
