Pühavaimu Church (Holy Spirit Church) Exterior - TALLINN, ESTONIA

Pühavaimu Church exterior with historic clock in Tallinn Old Town Estonia

Tucked inside Tallinn’s medieval Old Town, this modest white façade holds centuries of quiet significance.

The Pühavaimu Church (Holy Spirit Church) dates back to the 13th century and is one of the oldest churches in the city. Unlike the grand cathedrals nearby, it was historically the church of the common people, where sermons were delivered in Estonian—an important cultural shift at a time when Latin and German dominated religious life.

Above the entrance, its famous 17th-century clock still marks the passing of time, a rare surviving piece of public craftsmanship. The building may seem simple at first glance, but its role in Tallinn’s social and linguistic history runs deep.

Not every landmark impresses with scale—some endure through meaning.
