San Giacomo di Rialto - VENICE, ITALY
Before Venice became a postcard, it was a marketplace—and this is where it began.
San Giacomo di Rialto is often considered one of the oldest churches in Venice, traditionally dated to 421 AD (though the current structure is much later). Located in the heart of the historic Rialto Market, it stood at the center of the city’s commercial life, where merchants, traders, and buyers shaped the rhythm of daily existence.
The large clock on its façade is more than decorative—it once regulated the pace of trade, marking hours for deals, deliveries, and movement through the market. Around it, arcades and stalls still echo that past, even as the surroundings have shifted toward tourism.
Here, Venice doesn’t feel like a museum. It feels like a place that never really stopped working.
