Silk Market (Lonja de la seda) - VALENCIA, SPAIN

Historic façade of La Lonja de la Seda in Valencia, Spain, under a bright blue sky

At first glance, this grand Gothic building in Valencia looks more like a cathedral than a marketplace. Yet the La Lonja de la Seda was built to celebrate commerce.

Completed in the late 15th century, the Silk Exchange was the financial heart of Valencia during its golden age. Merchants gathered here to negotiate contracts, settle disputes, and trade one of Europe’s most valuable commodities: silk. The city’s prosperity was woven as much from fabric as from ambition.

The richly sculpted façade reflects a remarkable idea: trade itself was considered a noble pursuit. In an age when merchants connected the Mediterranean world, economic power was expressed through architecture as monumental as any palace or church.

Today, this UNESCO World Heritage site stands as a stone testament to the era when Valencia was one of the great commercial capitals of Europe.
